Tour Overview
First up is the Roluos Group where you will see some of the oldest temples built during the Khmer Empire. The three temples in this area used to form part of an ancient capital city which predates Angkor Wat by a couple of hundred years. Here you’ll get to see Bakong, Lolei, and Preah Ko.
Next, we’ll see one of the highlights of your visit to Siem Reap – Banteay Srei. This unique temple is made from pink sandstone from the quarries in the Kulen Mountain range. It is also home to some intricate carvings which if the legend is true, were carved by women. It’s said that the carvings are too beautiful to have been carved by a man!
We will also visit Pre Rup temple which is known as a mountain temple due to the steep climb to the towers at the top. It’s well worth making the effort to get to the top as you’ll get a unique view of the beautiful surrounding countryside. Pre Rup is one of the earlier temples built by the Khmer Kings and a popular temple with visitors.
Finally, you’ll visit the famous Ta Prohm temple which is commonly known as the Tomb Raider temple. This ancient temple which was once home to many thousands of monks, scholars, and servants, was used as a backdrop in the Lara Croft movie, Tomb Raider. This unique temple is a popular one among visitors because it has largely been left to the elements and the jungle is growing right through the middle of Ta Prohm!
On the second day of this tour, you’ll see the best that the Angkor Archaeological Park has to offer. We’ll start the tour with a visit to Angkor Wat, the reason why most people come to visit Siem Reap. Angkor Wat attracts over 2 millions visitors per year and is the largest temple built during the Khmer empire.
After exploring the massive Angkor Wat, we’ll head over to Preah Khan. Which is another 12th century temple built by the famous king Jayavarman VII. Unlike many other temples, Preah Khan has been left to the elements. It’s been made safe for visitors, but very little restoration work has taken place here.
Finally, we will visit the majestic Bayon temple. This temple has remnants of Hindu inscriptions as well as both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhist incriptions. It’s a fascinating temple and usually a favourite of most visitors. We’ll spend a few hours exploring all the nooks and crannies of this amazing temple.
